Darkness

The book Darkness explores the psychological state of darkness as refracted through memory, longing, and melancholy. The images form a visual poetics and employ as a repeating metaphor curtained, boarded, bricked, and cemented windows. Formally, Darkness uses black negative space to extend the darkness from within the images out onto the adjoining pages, both on the vertical and horizontal axis throughout the book.

The introductory text from Louisville, Kentucky, musician Will Oldham comes from his seminal album, ‘I See A Darkness’ (1999) for which he used the moniker ‘Bonnie “Prince” Billy’ (Palace / Domino Records). The Simplified Binding I learned from Joy and John Tonkin (Canberra, Australia) in Bloomington, Indiana, 2000.
